Global Journeys
Six Victorian teachers have begun sharing their reflections on the introduction of global education into their curriculum. Their brave writing will strike a chord with most educators and hopefully inspire them to give global education a prominent place in their own educational setting.

International Literacy Day
8 September
Imagine not being able to read the TV guide, food packets or instructions on medicine labels. International Literacy Day highlights the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. While literacy rates have improved there are still many people unable to read or attend school. Even young people attending school may only be able to attend some of the time, find themselves in crowded classrooms or without a teacher. The ILD, Education for All and the U.N. International Literacy Decade (2003 to 2012) all aim at addressing these needs.

International Day of Democracy
15 September
Throughout history, democracies have flourished, been threatened or dismantled, and re-emerged in societies all over the world. The involvement of the people in the public affairs of their countries is more likely than any other form of government to ensure basic freedoms and equality, meet the needs of everyone and preserve or restore peace.

International Day of Peace
21 September
Peace is a common desire for peoples throughout the world. The establishment of the United Nations in 1945, at the end of the most devastating war in human history, was an embodiment of this universal desire. 2001-2010 is the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. There is no better time to join the global movement to educate for a sustainable culture of peace.

UNAIDS 2008 report on the global AIDS epidemic
The report documents considerable progress in many countries in addressing their national epidemics. A six fold increase in financing for HIV programmes in low- and middle-income countries 2001–2007 is beginning to bear fruit, as gains in lowering the number of AIDS deaths and preventing new infections are apparent in many countries. Progress remains uneven, however, and the epidemic’s future is still uncertain, underscoring the need for intensified action to move towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Multimedia presentations, statistics and the complete report are available at:

Waters of Tuvalu: A nation at risk 5 August - 16 November 2008
This exhibition at the Immigration Museum explores the effects of climate change on Pacific Island nations. It poses the challenging question: What would you do if you had no homeland? The survival of the islands of Tuvalu is expected to be dramatically affected in coming decades by rising sea levels through the impact of climate change, leaving Tuvaluans effectively stateless.
The exhibition will explore how Tuvaluans living in Melbourne are struggling with the idea that their nation and heritage will cease to exist altogether.
